Yangon General Hospital is among the largest public hospitals in Myanmar and a major referral centre, long associated with medical teaching in Yangon. Its scale and role as a place where complicated cases are sent are what make it relevant to more demanding dental problems rather than routine care.

Everyday dental treatment in Myanmar is provided by dental clinics rather than a large general hospital. Yangon General is more likely to be involved when oral care crosses into surgery or medicine: oral and maxillofacial surgery, facial trauma, severe infections of the mouth and jaw, or dental treatment for patients whose other conditions raise the risks of ordinary care. A hospital that brings together surgery, medicine and emergency services is suited to that kind of multidisciplinary work. Myanmar’s public health system faces substantial demand and specialist resources are concentrated in the largest cities.
