Discolored Tooth

Our teeth can become discolored by stains on the surface or by changes in the tooth material. It can be classified into 3 main categories. Extrinsic: This occurs when the outer layer of the tooth is stained. Intrinsic: When Inner Surface or structure of the tooth (the dentin) darkens or gets a yellow tint. Age-related: This is a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Dentin naturally yellows over time. The enamel that covers the teeth gets thinner with age, which allows the dentin to show through.

Discolored Tooth

Teeth become discolored for different reasons:

  • Drinking coffee, tea, or cola
  • Some antibiotics may darken developing teeth in children.
  • Aging - The dentin underneath the enamel of a tooth gradually darkens with age.
  • Use of tobacco products.
  • Accidents - If a tooth has been traumatized, sometimes the nerve will gradually "die", and the tooth becomes dark.
  • After Root Canal Therapy, a tooth will generally darken.

Ranging from yellow to permanent white spot on the teeth, symptoms of discoloration may vary.
