coronectomy: Definition, Uses, and Clinical Overview
coronectomy is a dental surgical procedure where the crown of a tooth is removed while the roots are intentionally left in place. It is most commonly discussed for lower wisdom teeth (mandibular third molars) that sit close to the inferior alveolar nerve. The goal is to reduce the chance of nerve injury compared with removing the entire tooth. Follow-up is usually part of care because the retained roots can change position over time.
